Google has been harvesting data on banned wordsÂ for its upcoming censored Chinese search engine using a ‘honeypot’ website it acquired a decade ago.Â
The website is a Chinese-language web directory, that also provides updates on news,Â financial markets, cheap flights and hotels. Any search queries entered on the site are redirected to Baidu, China’s version of Google.
However, Google was able to see these search terms and note exactly what was blockedÂ by the ruling Communist Party regime in China.Â
